Annual BioImprove meeting
Our second annual meeting was held here in Umeå. The theme for the meeting was “Meeting the media”. The day was started by presentations of two journalists, Karin Wikman and Hans Fällman, who instructed and told about their experiences on how to contact media and write press releases as a scientist. We also heard some shorter presentations from students and PIs within the BioImprove project. The graduate student Prashant Pawar described some exciting results about modifications in the Populus wood chemistry that resulted in increases in saccharification potential both in Arabidopsis and Populus. Additional chemically modified Populus trees and results about their saccharification potential were presented by the graduate student Venkata Soudham. The graduate student Amir described some interesting novel approaches to study sugar allocation in Populus trees. Assistant professor Torgeir Hvidsten told about the progress of his project to identify regulatory networks within metabolomic, proteomic and RNA sequencing data of the transgenic BioImprove Populus trees using bioinformatics tools. Last, professor Stefan Jansson from the department of plant physiology at UPSC talked about his experiences around the debate article published in Dagens Nyheter. The day was finished with a wonderful dinner in a ghostly atmosphere of Baggböle Herrgård. |

Joint annual Funcfibe r/BioImprove meeting at Pite havsbad
The first annual meeting of the BioImprove program was held jointly with the final meeting of the FuncFiber program in Pite Havsbad 14-15 December, 2010. We had some very interesting talks from the invited speakers Rikard Gebart (ETC, Piteå), Björn Alriksson (Processum, Ö-vik), Henrik Aspeborg (KTH, Stockholm) and Ines Ezcurra (KTH, Stockholm). The main program was filled with presentations by the newly recruited BioImprove graduate students. We were all excited by the high quality of the student presentations, and it will be interesting to follow the progress of these different PhD programs. The FuncFiber leader Björn Sundberg delivered an important message to the students in his talk by saying “you all have good supervisors and other competent scientists around you, but now it is up to you to deliver and perform the project”. At the end of the meeting, different aspects of the FuncFiber program were summarized by Lorenz Gerber, Tommy Öman, Gunnar Wingsle and finally by Björn Sundberg, who thanked the involved PIs, András Gorzsás, and all others that in one way or another were involved in the FuncFiber program.
The abstract book of the meeting is available for BioImprove members in the “internal” site at www.bioimprove.se. |
